Mechanical Project Engineer

Position overview

EM3 is seeking a motivated mechanical engineer with around five or more years of relevant experience to support the delivery of energy efficiency and decarbonisation initiatives. This is a technically strong, delivery-focused role, well suited to progression toward senior and project-lead positions within an energy consultancy setting.

Key responsibilities

Project delivery and engineering support

  • Support the mechanical design and execution of energy-related projects, including HVAC, compressed air, heat recovery, steam, hot water and thermal systems, and refrigeration and process cooling systems
  • Contribute to feasibility studies, concept design and detailed engineering under senior engineer guidance
  • Assist with site surveys, data collection and system validation

Design and technical documentation

  • Prepare mechanical engineering calculations, specifications and technical documentation
  • Develop drawings, schematics and tender information
  • Contribute to energy modelling and system performance analysis

Project coordination

  • Collaborate with project managers, senior engineers and cross-disciplinary teams
  • Support contractor engagement during installation, commissioning and handover
  • Attend site meetings and resolve technical queries
  • Review tender documentation, contractor proposals and technical clarifications from cost-benefit and risk perspectives

Client and stakeholder engagement

  • Interface with client engineering and operations teams
  • Prepare technical reports and present findings clearly
  • Understand the importance of client value, repeatability and practical implementation

Continuous improvement

  • Stay informed of emerging technologies and best practices in industrial energy systems
  • Contribute ideas to improve performance, safety and reliability

Core competencies and skills

  • Mechanical engineering fundamentals: a strong grounding in thermodynamics, heat transfer, fluid mechanics and mechanical systems design
  • Industrial utilities exposure: experience with HVAC, steam systems, compressed air, chilled water or process utilities
  • Project mindset: comfortable managing multiple projects with structure, accountability and attention to detail, maintaining accurate records for project reporting, governance and commercial control
  • Commercial awareness: an understanding of project cost drivers, value engineering and commercial design implications, supporting delivery in line with agreed scopes, programmes and budgets
  • Technical documentation: experience producing calculations, reports and engineering deliverables for client and contractor use
  • Regulations and standards: familiarity with Irish and EU standards (CIBSE, ASHRAE, PED, IS/EN)
  • Communication: professional engagement with colleagues, clients and contractors

Experience and qualifications

  • Degree in mechanical engineering or a related discipline
  • Typically five or more years' experience in mechanical engineering roles, ideally within energy, industrial, utilities, engineering consultancy or technical project delivery
  • Energy efficiency or decarbonisation project experience is advantageous but not essential
  • Chartered Engineer status, or working toward chartership, is desirable but not required
  • Proficiency in AutoCAD, Revit or similar design tools, with energy modelling software preferred
  • Full clean driving licence and willingness to travel to client sites
